Stubbs Advocacy: St. Anthony's

Section 1: Identifying the problem on a global, national, and local level.

We chose to help at St. Anthony’s food bank because in our opinion, it was an important issue to help with, as 1/6th of people in the U.S.struggle to put food on the table, and 20% of children in America are hungry every day. Being hungry affects your ability to work, and if you cannot be productive at work, then you won’t be able to receive money.  The food banks around the country help the lives of these people so they are able to eat. A third of all children under the age of 5 in 3rd world countries die from malnutrition. The world has enough food for everyone everywhere to have an ample meal, but the problem is in distribution. Starting with America, we can help the global issue by distributing food to those in need.
Lots of times we forget the pain of being hungry but we can do something about it. Stuff like donating food, and helping out at food banks such as what we are doing can make a HUGE difference.

One of the problems with going to a private school is that we are not exposed to these issues that are very common. For example, our lunch is included in our tuition, and still some students take advantage of this and go off campus to buy lunch. By going to help at the food bank, we expand our knowledge about hunger and help those in need.

Section 2: What is St. Anthony’s doing?
With St. Anthony’s, they are not just providing food, but also clothing and healthcare consultations for those who are struggling with more than just hunger.  Compared to Glide, St. Anthony’s not does not include a religious aspect to their services, making it more of a communal organization.  Glide also provides more of a local outreach program, including a program to improve the environment in the Tenderloin.  St. Anthony’s does not do as many events and outreach, and chooses to spend more time on simple food service.  As Yasmin told us, St. Antony’s creates a welcoming environment with no questions asked, with many regulars and continual volunteers.

Section 3: What do we want to get out of it?

Since the problem is such an immediate one, helping directly allows us to see the faces of the people we’re aiding, and we can see their gratitude and appreciation right away. Also, we know more about how our donation and work helped people, instead of just donating money to a fund, and hoping that it goes to the right place and makes a difference. We hope that in our time at St. Anthony’s, we will be put a face to the problem of hunger, and connect with those in our community who need our help.
